Please join us in celebrating the memory of our dear friend, Joe Pecora, by contributing to a Memorial Bench in Alamo Square Park.
Located at the Steiner and Grove street entrance, the bench will face east in the direction of the Painted Ladies, Joe’s beautiful home, and the city that he loved so much.
About Joe Pecora
For half a century until his death in 2020, Joe was a neighborhood champion, local historian, key member of the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association (ASNA) and the Victorian Alliance of San Francisco (VASF). Most importantly, Joe always had a kind word for everyone he met, and a truly generous spirit.
In 1979, Joe bought a derelict Victorian house near Alamo Square, slated for “urban renewal”. Joe and his neighbors crusaded against the Redevelopment Agency, and saved the neighborhood's cherished Victorian homes from demolition. Today, thanks in part to Joe’s efforts, Alamo Square is a renowned historic district, worldwide tourist attraction, and a true San Francisco treasure.
Joe helped found the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association, and in the process, the Alamo Square Historic District. He became our local Alamo Square historian. Joe eventually published a book, The Storied Houses of Alamo Square, containing the history of the architects builders, and residents of the many homes in the neighborhood, including the local lore surrounding them. Joe's book is treasured by countless lovers of Victorian architecture and local history.
Joe was an active member of other local and national organizations, including the Victorian Alliance, the Decorative Arts Forum, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Joe was a known as a generous host who opened his beautifully restored home every year to his many friends. Guests lucky enough to attend to his annual gatherings remember a home filled with love and warmth, and especially at Christmas – every room gave a room delighted guests with holiday trees adorned with priceless antique ornaments!
Joe's Final Interview
In 2020 we planned on launching the "Stories of Alamo Square" series to share the stories of different characters around the Alamo Square neighborhood. Who better to kick off the series than Joe Pecora? Through his gentle kindness and generosity, Joe made an impact on so many people in his lifetime.
We began shooting this video with Joe in February but were unable to capture additional footage due to the subsequent CoVid lockdowns. Sadly, our dear friend and neighbor passed away later that year. This video is made up of the footage we were able to capture in February.
Thank you for everything, Joe. You are missed!
